Herb Hamrol was born in 1903. He survived the 1906 Earthquake and Fires that destroyed San Francisco. He still works at a local supermarket and lives by himself. As he prepares to attend the 1906 Earthquake centennial commemoration on April 18, 2006 together with a group of living Earthquake survivors, he tries to come to terms with the death of his wife, to whom he was married forty years and has outlived her almost the same amount of time.

Alex, Carrie and Andy, a group of middle of the road, Hollywood wannabes, spend their time waiting for their number to come up in a town that's full of rejection. While Carrie is trying to get a record deal through intimate relations and Andy endures humiliating auditions on his way to being a mega star, It's the new comer, Alex, who tries to make sense out of this place by writing his first screenplay.
