Will their love be strong enough to break the mental barrier that separates the world of Bohatyrowicz from the world of Korczyński?

Wacław Kaczmarski has been breeding pigeons for many years, which is a family tradition (his grandfather and father bred pigeons before him). The birds are an important part of his life; he spends every free moment with them, and they are his escape from everyday worries. Kaczmarski and his family live in Targówek in old apartments that are scheduled for demolition. He gets a new apartment in Ursynów, where he immediately installs pigeon boxes on the balcony. The neighbors are outraged.

First days of September 1939. The government decides to transport the Polish gold stored in the treasury of the National Bank of Poland out of the threatened Warsaw. A convoy is formed under the command of the man for special tasks, Major Bobruk. A string of trucks and city buses travel along crowded roads under relentless attack by aircraft. The convoy makes its way through Lublin to Romanian territory, where the gold will be reloaded onto a train. Prime Minister Calinescu, disregarding the threats of the Nazis, agrees to the transit of the precious bullion through his country. The evacuation of the gold is threatened all the time by a special German sabotage group under the command of Second Lieutenant Rudolf Lang.

Poland, 1945. Crowds of repatriates are traveling from east to west in search of new homes and loved ones lost during the war. At one of the train stations, a young woman, Hanna Powiłańska, sits among the crowd of displaced persons. The girl recalls a story of turbulent love. Before the war, at a carnival ball, she met the handsome Lech Oleszkiewicz. In September, war broke out. Hanna meets the engineer again and spends the night with him. In the morning, the man tells her that he is married. Hanna breaks off the relationship.
