Fox Movietone News

On May 20-21, 1927, Charles A. Lindbergh flew alone, non-stop from New York to Paris, in a single-engine plane without parachute or radio. With this feat, Lindbergh became perhaps the greatest hero of the decade. Fox Movietone's sound film record of Lindbergh's take-off was the first popular sensation of sound film; it was soon augmented by coverage of his welcome in Washington on June 11th.

This 1946 entry in the "Movietone Adventures" series of shorts was in Technicolor when originally released. Narrated by Lowell Thomas, it is a trip from Medicine Hat in southern Utah down the rapids of the San Juan River ending with a view of the Rainbow Bridge, hence the title and the use of Tehnicolor. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Short Subject, One-Reel.

"This young gentleman talks to you from far Singapore, half way 'round the world." From the Fox Movietone News Collection, filmed in 1930, a Chinese boy, speaking English, introduces himself and his sister, then attempts to dispel some common American stereotypes about the Chinese. A chronicle of the demonstrations and public events held on the occasion of the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic on April 14, 1931 (Sound newsreel shot by Fox Movietone News discovered in 2009.)

Movietone News produced this short (two-minute) sing-along version of United States' national anthem featuring the popular chorus, "Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians." While the Star-Spangled Banner is sung, a patriotic montage of scenes appears in the background.

This film examines the reasons why the United States decided to engage in the Korean War. Scenes describe Russia's attempt to gain power following World War II (Korea included), and its refusal to allow free elections in the country. Footage shows Soviet-backed North Korean troops' movement into South Korea on June 25, 1950, the United Nations' response, and the armed struggle against both North Korean and later Chinese troops led by General Douglas MacArthur. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation in 2005.

Made by 20th Century Fox as part of their "Adventures of the Newsreel Cameramen" series, this black & white film contains spectacular footage of early 20th Century aviation, while showcasing the newsreel cameramen who documented pilots and planes.
