In the summer of 1939, 13-year-old Marie goes with her parents to visit her grandparents in a small town near Avignon. Marie discovers her femininity and falls for a young Jewish doctor, but he prefers Eva, Marie's mother.

The action takes place in a central German town in the 1920s. A Jewish factory owner is accused of murdering his accountant. The German nationalist investigating judge, who is determined to have a Jewish perpetrator, still sees Blum as the perpetrator even when evidence of the actual murderer, a former Freikorp fighter, is found. The Social Democratic court president from Berlin sends a criminal investigator to tear apart the judge's chain of evidence.

The negative physical and psychological effects of anabolic steroids, growth hormones, and masking agents are examined in this European drama which focuses upon the conflict felt by a young runner whose fear of failure exceeds her fear of the drugs. Catherine Delaunay, a 25-year old runner, has just be named French champion after the real winner is disqualified for using drugs. When she suffers a small injury herself she begins using the drugs at the insistence of her German trainer and an unethical sports doctor. Catherine becomes hooked upon her regimen of medication and begins to suffer physical and mental side-effects. To conceal her drug use, Catherine keeps a large supply of "clean" urine. When she really does become drug free, her times suffer. A federation official strongly suggests she get pregnant as they hormones produced by early pregnancy will help her speed.

On planet Perdide, an attack of giant hornets leaves young Piel alone in a wrecked car with his dying father. A mayday message reaches their friend Jaffar, an adventurer travelling through space. Onboard Jaffar’s shuttle are the renegade Prince Matton, his fiancée, and Silbad, who knows Perdide well. Thus begins an incredible race across space to save Piel.

After many years away, development aid worker Peter Kessel returns to his home town of Gutenbach in 1982. He is astonished to discover that a lot has changed there. He lets Johannes, the broke and unsuccessful applicant, stay with him. Ingo decides to go to Munich with Johannes, where he wants to try his luck once again. Hitchhiking, they get rides with very different drivers on the autobahn. They meet up with the smooth-talking Ali in the wayside dinner "Raststätte Spessart". Arriving in Munich, the trio tries to find cheap sleeping accommodation. They enter Ingo into the audition at Munich acting school.
