Véronique is a beautiful young French woman who aspires to be a renowned singer; Weronika lives in Poland, has a similar career goal and looks identical to Véronique, though the two are not related. The film follows both women as they contend with the ups and downs of their individual lives, with Véronique embarking on an unusual romance with Alexandre Fabbri, a puppeteer who may be able to help her with her existential issues.

A young man returns home from college during a holiday break to visit his widowed mother. Along the way he meets an attractive woman and they hit it off so well during his return trip that she accepts an invitation from him to stay at his Mother's house during his stay. But his Mother is not pleased with this surprise as she has rather strong feelings for her own son and desires to keep him all for herself.

Ronia lives happily in her father's castle until she comes across a new playmate, Birk, in the nearby dark forest. The two explore the wilderness, braving dangerous Witchbirds and Rump-Gnomes. Now the two spunky children must try to tear down the barriers that have kept their families apart for so long.

Liv Ulmann's directorial debut also had her co-authoring the screenplay (with poet Peter Poulsen) as based on a Henri Nathansen's 1932 novel about an affluent late 19th century Jewish merchant family in Copenhagen. Ulmann focuses on strong-willed daughter Sofie's progress through life: a love affair with a gentile painter, an arranged marriage , childbirth and ever more fateful challenges.

Herman works as a delivery boy for a flower shop after school.
