Elina, the daughter of a small farmer, would like to attend a folk high school, but her father Nestor opposes the idea. Elina suffers a severe skull fracture in an accident and is sent to Helsinki to be treated by specialist Matt. The patient recovers and begins her studies. She falls in love with forest ranger Lauri, who leaves for Canada for two years. Elina becomes ill with heartbreak and the rejection of her novel.

Schoolboy Klaus is convicted of theft and sent to prison. At his release Klaus feels that his life has changed a lot. Despite all his hardship and difficulties he keeps up his studies under the supervision of the grim Master Kahari.

Despite the opposition of Principal Kuusi, she decides to take the matriculation examination and, in order to improve her writing skills, responds to a correspondence advertisement placed by the mysterious Master Ahtojää.
