The year is 2023, and elections are nearing in Goma, a Congolese city of one million people situated near the border with genocide-ravaged Rwanda. It is a region rich in valuable natural resources, where bloody conflicts over ethnic and economic issues have been raging for three decades, devastating eastern Congo. Two members of the La Lucha civil society movement decide to abandon activism in favour of a career in politics. Espoir, a young activist, stands as a candidate for the National Assembly on behalf of the opposition. Sankara who, confined to a wheelchair, has become a symbol of resistance, joins the outgoing president’s coalition. When rebel troops from the M23 group enter Goma, their dreams of democracy are thrown into doubt.

In March 2011, an unprecedented tsunami strikes Japan, leaving in its wake 20,000 dead and a devastated country. The missing come back to haunt the living from the depths of the sea. While gigantic breakwater walls are put up to counteract future great waves, reports of ghosts and spirits returning home spread all along the Japanese coast. The visible and the invisible conflate in this no-man's land where reconstruction has begun taking place.

In the spring of 2009, Sri Lanka's decades long civil war is entering its most violent phase. Siva, a young Sri Lankan refugee living illegally in France, has lost contact with the family he was forced to leave behind. Haunted by the trauma of the war that devastated his childhood and obsessed by the flow of images on the Internet, Siva sinks into a waking dream that propels him into the heart of the battlefield.
