1970 something. As the end of an era of repression approaches, a bourgeois family still in its bubble of power spends its vacation in a country house. The teenage cousins spend their days in indolence, interrupted by fits of hysteria. It will only take the introduction of an outside element for violence to erupt.

In other words, Balane 3 is a documentary about the lives and times of the inhabitants of Inhambane, a city in the south of Mozambique. Like any other people in the world, the characters in this film work as car washers, fishermend or butchers, they go to school, hospitals, barbershops and street markets, they drink and dance at night, they talk about diseases, politics, friends, love and sex. They talk a lot about sex.

Taking the shape of a photo-novel, the documentary not only recounts the founding members lives as trans women under the Argentine dictatorship (1976-1983), the AIDS epidemy, state repression and mass assassinations but also years of fighting for their rights, sorority and the exaltation of life and laughter in times of death. Filming each one of them is filming them embracing their new role as curators, archivists and historians while a collection of 7,000 photos goes through the filter of their memories.

Domingos and Neusia are a young couple from a small city in Mozambique. She goes to school, he has an underpaid job at a car wash. Yearning for a better life, Domingos sets on a journey through Mozambique, heading to the gold mines in the north of the country. In the meantime, Neusia waits at home.

In 2020, unable to travel, Ico Costa left a small camera with Ailucha and Domy, two young Mozambicans from the city of Inhambane, and asked them to film their daily lives. The result: working, playing, walking, hanging around, smoking, listening to music, singing, dancing, feeling desire – being teenagers.

In an isolated nursing home high in the mountains, Némesio, Colette, and other residents ponder the future and its mysteries.
