SET Film

A small island is inhabited by members of the Bajo tribe, a nomadic fishing community of the Wakatobi Islands. After her father is lost at sea, twelve-year-old Pakis keeps treasuring the mirror he gave her, hoping that (according to Bajo belief) he will return and appear reflected in it. Then a young man comes into her life, threatening conflict between Pakis and her mother.

A young man is kept distant from his lover by a strict and unforgiving society. He’d go through hell to be with her, but when a deal with the devil goes sour, hell comes to him instead. This unprecedented collaboration across cultures brings together the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and a 20-piece Indonesian gamelan orchestra to conjure the bewitching live score for the newly commissioned film Satan Jawa. Directed by revered Indonesian filmmaker Garin Nugroho, Satan Jawa’s soundtrack has been jointly written by award-winning Australian composer/conductor Iain Grandage and renowned Indonesian composer Rahayu Supanggah.

Of the 30,000 "disappeared" during the reign of the Argentine Military Junta in the 1970s and early 1980s, a disproportionate number, nearly 3,000, were Jews. Murderer portrays the victims, who were murdered by fiercely anti-Semitic soldiers, and their anguished families, whose lives were torn apart by what happened to their loved ones. These families also demand justice, which was denied them when amnesty was granted to the military officers implicated in the torture and murders. In a striking and surprising scene, neighbors "escrachan" one of the repressors and try to expel him from the quiet neighborhood where he had retired to live. A stark examination of the wound in a country that has not yet healed.
